Carrickmines Handicap Chase (Grade B) Preview

Leopardstown stage their big trials day before Cheltenham on Sunday and while most of those with Festival aspirations will work after racing, there are nonetheless some decent races on the card.

The Carrickmines Handicap Chase over 2m 5f  is a fascinating contest and students of the form book have been set a real poser here. Any number of the seventeen strong field could take this contest on their day and the intermediate trip brings most into contention with no horse standing out as being ideally suited.

Willie Mullins runs topweight Arbor Supreme in what is surely a Grand National trial. It will be interesting to see how the gelding’s jumping holds up at the shorter trip and perhaps the sole reason for running is to get this experience into him. At the same time, by running here, Mullins keeps the weights down for Polmar who nestles towards the foot of the handicap.

Also at the right end of the weights is Mick The Man who finally broke his maiden tag over fences last time. A former top class bumper horse, Colm Murphy’s inmate looks the type who could improve now that he has finally got his head in front, and this strong-traveling type looks one to bear in mind for each-way prospects at the very least.

Stewarts House and Conem also appeal as likely to make the frame but for a selection I am siding with Paddy Power third, Leanne, from the small yard of Willie Harney. The mare ran a huge race over three miles here at Christmas, and ran as well as could have been expected when chasing home Whinstone Boy last time. Coming from these quarters she is likely to be underestimated in the market and at a double figure price she appeals as the best each-way bet in the race.

Summary: A wide open contest but plenty of value as a result and an each-way bet on Leanne is advised. Mick The Man and Stewarts House can fill the frame.
