Bog Warrior in action
Hi everyone, due to technical difficulties beyond our control we were unable to publish your regular Wednesday preview of the upcoming racing.
Thankfully, we seem to have sorted the problems out and now I can belatedly point you in the direction of Mal Boyle’s thoughts on what lies ahead. There’s racing at Thurles, Dundalk (A/W), Down Royal, Limerick and Leopardstown, which hosts the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase, where Bog Warrior is expected to go well.
THURSDAY 22/12:
THURLES:
General stats: Willie Mullins has saddled more winners than the next four leading represented trainers have managed between them on Thursday’s Thurles card.
Two and a quarter mile handicap chase scheduled for 12.35: All seven winners have carried weights of 11-0 or less.
‘Molony Cup’ scheduled for 1.05: Three favourites have scored via six contests thus far.
Two mile Listed hurdle event scheduled for 2.05: Just one favourite has obliged to date via eight renewals.
Two and three quarter mile handicap hurdle event scheduled for 3.05: The last five winners have carried weights of 10-11 or less.
FRIDAY 23/12:
DUNDALK:
General stats: I have flagged up Kevin Ryan’s positive record at Dundalk consistently, though I did not expect the trainer to have any runners on Friday! Blue Moon (6.00) is the potential raider.
MONDAY 26/12:
DOWN ROYAL:
General stats: Mervyn Torrens held two options on the card last week and with reasonable figures to call on at the venue (nearly ten points LSP via a 9/61 strike rate), the horses should be worth a saver if offered the green light. Few trainers boast ‘black figures’ in the NH sector at Down Royal in all honesty.
Hunter Chase event scheduled for 12.30: Three of the five renewals to date have been secured by market leaders, the biggest priced winner being returned at just 6/1.
Two and a half mile Beginners’ Chase scheduled for 1.00: Gordon Elliott was responsible for three of the twenty one five-day declarations, the trainer coming into the contest on a hat trick. Favourites of one description or another have won seven of the last nine contests.
Two and a half mile maiden hurdle scheduled for 2.00: Five-year-olds have won four of the last six contests, whilst favourites have secured three of the last ten renewals during which time, nine winners have scored at odds of 6/1 or less.
Two mile maiden hurdle scheduled for 2.30: Six-year-olds lead the five-year-olds 5-3 via the last nine contests.
Two mile handicap hurdle event scheduled for 3.00: Seven renewals have slipped by without a market leader securing the main prize
INH race scheduled for 3.30: Five-year-olds had won six consecutive events until the last three races were contested without another winner being added to the tally. Successful favourites have been conspicuous by their absence during the study period.
LEOPARDSTOWN:
General stats: Dermot Weld boasts an LSP figure of 33 points via a 33% strike rate in recent years.
Two and a quarter mile maiden hurdle scheduled for 12.20: General stats: An 11/10 six-year-old ended a run of nine consecutive successes for five-year-olds in this event last time around.
Two mile maiden event scheduled for 12.50: Favourites have won four of the last six renewals during which time, the biggest priced winner was returned at 100/30.
Grade 2 juvenile hurdle event scheduled for 1.20: Just two favourites have obliged during the last decade.
Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase scheduled for 2.20: Five favourites have won via the last ten contests.
Seventeen furlong handicap chase scheduled for 2.55: Arthur Moore has saddled three of the last nine winners whereby his only penultimate stage declaration Sorceror might be kept on the right side.
LIMERICK:
General stats: Tommy Stack has won with the only two runners he has saddled at Limerick whereby his potential raider Mister Carter should be worth an investment, subject to positive chalk marks being scratched onto the board.
Two mile six furlong maiden hurdle scheduled for 2.35: Five-year-olds have won five of the last seven contests, whilst favourites have been conspicuous by their absence during the nine year study period.
4YO Hurdle event scheduled for 1.35: Favourites have secured six of the last eight renewals.
Grade 2 novice chase event scheduled for 2.10: Michael Hourigan comes to the gig on a hat trick and Crash was his only entry the other side of the weekend. Five and six-year-olds have equally shared eight of the last nine contests, whilst six renewals have slipped by without a winning favourite being registered.
INH event scheduled for 3.50: Five-year-olds lead the four-year-olds 6-3 via the last nine contests.
