The 9 Minute System Review

The 9 Minute System is a combined backing/laying system for UK racing, based on attempting to maximise value from an offer currently available from a particular bookmaker by implementing a particular strategy. You need an account with the bookmaker, obviously, and a Betfair or other exchange account.

The Website claims that the  9 Minute System takes only nine minutes per day and that “You will win with this method, NO DOUBT!”, so we’ll put those claims to the test over the next 45 racing days.

The 9 Minute System comes as a 15-page ebook and nominally costs £87, though there is currently an offer for £67 on the website. Typically, there are one or two selections per day.

The promoters propose three variants of strategy. Two of them involve placing bets before racing starts. The third requires placing bets close to the off and so, unless you’re available at racing time, you’ll need a betting bot to implement the third strategy. I’ll try to paper-trade all three strategies.

Neither the website nor the ebook contains detailed historical results.

Note: the website includes a recommendation to limit stakes to £20 to reduce the likelihood of your account being limited by the bookmaker.

At the end of the review the 9 Minute System has performed as claimed by the owners, all three variants returning the scale of profits predicted in the promotional material. It is that rare thing – a system that is practically guaranteed to return a profit once you achieve anything approaching the statistically normal strike rate to be expected from the odds range at which bets are placed. There are not many systems that can (legitimately) make that claim and so I am very happy to give it a positive recommendation.

You will not achieve life changing riches with The 9 Minute System, because the maximum stake accepted for the bookmaker’s special offer that it exploits is £50. My winnings are quoted to £10 stakes. If I had been staking the maximum £50 per bet, the profit from Variant 3 (which is the one I will go with) would have been £380 in 45 days’ racing. Extended over a year that would amount to an annual profit of over £3,000 virtually risk-free, which is a very satisfactory outcome.

As noted by the owners of the 9 Minute System, there is always a danger (indeed a probability) of having your account closed by the bookmaker for achieving results like this but they recommend a neat way around this – lose it! I’m not joking. When your bank has crept up to a reasonable size and you want to withdraw your winnings, simply bet your bank on a loser, while simultaneously laying the same horse on Betfair, obviously at lay odds a close as possible to the back odds from the bookmaker.

So, for example, let’s say you put your £500 bank on My Loser at 5/1 with the bookie and with luck you’re able to get 5/1 lay odds on My Loser at Betfair and you lay it for £500. When My Loser duly loses, your bank at the bookie’s is gone, your bookie is happy and you don’t lose your account, but you pick up £475 (£500 less 5% commission) from Betfair.

I found that it took longer than the claimed 9 minutes per day to make selections, but I was testing all three variants. I won’t be doing that live and using Variant 3 by itself takes well under nine minutes.

The system is performing well to date and delivering small but reliable profits as claimed by the owners. I am finding it requires a lot more work than claimed to find qualifying selections for two of the three variants of the system. While the system is simple to execute manually, its particular requirements make it too hard (for me, anyway) to automate with a bot. Therefore, I’m doing it manually and I’m finding that the nine-minute claim stands up for Variant 3 – you can nearly always find a suitable qualifier for this variant close to the off. However, if I were to spend just nine minutes once a day looking for qualifiers for Variants 1 and 2, I would miss out on qualifiers and consequent wins, so I’m checking several times a day. The good news is that variant 3 is the best performing version to date.

I’m quite impressed so far and I’m confident now from my experience of how the system works that it will deliver consistent modest profits.

The 9 Minute System Performs – take a look….

Betalay System

I’ve got a copy of the Betalay system for review and I propose to test it live over the next 45 racing days. I’ll post here every day the previous day’s results and the running profit or loss to £10 stakes at Betfair SP (after deduction of 5% Betfair commission).Betalay is a laying system, applying to races in Great Britain only. It’s a very simple system – you lay horses using a simple criterion based on rank in the betting market in races that meet the qualifying criterion. It is applicable to all types of race under Flat and NH rules. There is an upper odds limit, above which you do not bet, which is a sensible precaution in any laying system and limits the amount you can lose on a single bet.

You place the bet no earlier than 30 seconds before the start, to be sure the horse you’re backing meets the system criteria at the off (or, at least, very close to the off). This means either that you must be available to  monitor live prices and place bets manually or that you use a betting bot (automated betting software) to place the bets automatically.

The Betalay system costs £27 and comes in the form of an ebook that explains how to operate the system. As an ebook, of course, the system offers no possibility of a free trial or a guarantee of money back if not satisfied – the ebook describes the system and once you’ve seen it you know the system.

The ebook is eight pages long and very clearly describes the system and how to operate it. It also recommends a particular automated betting software package, should you wish to automate your use of the system. There is also a link to download Betalay’s own configuration settings for the software.

One substantial caveat at this stage: the Betalay website provides results for the system since the year 2000.  Unfortunately, these results are completely misleading, on two counts

• They are based on laying at SP which makes no sense as lay odds available on Betfair and the other exchanges are almost always considerably higher than the odds available from the regular bookies, on which the standard SP is based. My own research shows that, for the range of prices covered in Betalay’s historical results, Betfair SP odds are, on average, almost 16.5% higher than standard SP. The effect of this is that losing bets would, in reality, have lost more than quoted in Betalay’s results history and thus the profits quoted are considerably overstated.

• The results do not take exchange commission into account. Since the betting public can only place lay bets using Betfair or the other exchanges and since these exchanges charge typically 5% on all winning bets, this means that, again, the profits quoted in Betalay’s historical results are greatly overstated.

These are fundamental errors in calculating returns on any laying system and it is surprising and disturbing that Betalay would overlook them in presenting their claimed historical results.

We’re off to a poor start as the £95 earned from ten losers (10 x £10 less 5% commission) was more than reversed by two winners at Betfair SPs of 5.8 and 8.68 costing us £124.80.

to £332.10. That’s a profit of 33 points in 8 days, with a strike rate of 93.8% and a return on
investment of 8.5%, in terms of the total amount risked (each lay bet carries a potential loss
of £10 multiplied by the odds).

We’ve had only four losing bets in 64 bets. Normal probablility would have predicted about nine losses
over 64 bets at the average odds laid to date, but there’s no reason to get carried away. This is still a
very small statistical sample. If we have a system that’s genuinely beating the statistical odds, this
will show over the long term. Since each bet delivers a maximum profit of £9.50 but risks a potential
loss of up to £80, it’s easy to see that a few losing bets can very quickly make a large hole in our
betting bank.

Nevertheless, so far, so good.

At approximately halfway through our 45-day trial we have 205 winning bets from 237, a Strike Rate of 86.5%. This is pretty much precisely the statistically predicted strike rate at the average odds at which we have laid (7.29). So, while this is still a small statistical sample, it seems that to date the system is performing no better or worse than the statistically expected outcome.

This is borne out by our near break-even Return On Investment (ROI) figure. It is slightly negative, a loss of £64.10 on a total amount risked of £14,905 giving an ROI of -0.4%. This is in fact slightly better than we would expect from matching the predicted strike rate, which would normally return a bigger loss, when we factor in 5% commission on winning bets.

Our longest losing run so far was two; our bank reached a peak of £404.90 and a low of -£129.30; we’ve had eleven winning days and twelve losing days; our best day returned a profit of £114, while our worst saw a loss of £301.50.

So we’ve reached the end of the 45-day Betalay system trial showing a loss of almost £150 or 15 points. 391 wins out of 453 bets represents a strike rate of 86.3%. The average odds at which we placed lay bets was decimal 7.3. As it happens, 86.3% is precisely the strike rate we would statistically expect over the long term when laying at 7.3. So I think we can say that our trial shows that the Betalay system performs no better or no worse than laying horses at random at around this price.

Of course, performing at the statistically predicted strike rate guarantees a loss when commission and market overround are factored in. The Betalay system, which comes in the form of an ebook at a price of £27 was easy enough to understand, interpret and use, though unless you are a full time punter you need a betting bot to automate selections and placing of bets as the selections are based on meeting the system criteria within 30 seconds of the scheduled race time.

There were an average of ten bets per day. The longest losing run was two.  The bank reached a high of £404.90 and a low of -£297.30. We had 21 winning days and 24 losing days; our best day returned a profit of £161.50, while our worst saw a loss of £301.50. Overall, I didn’t see anything to suggest that the system can beat the statistical odds and there’s nothing in the logic of the system criteria, in the results obtained or indeed in historical results over years that indicates otherwise.

Finally, as I mentioned at the outset, the historical results quoted on the Betalay website are misleading as they do not take into account either Betfair commission or the markup on Betfair lay prices as compared to standard SP.

It is a month since my last post, the reason being that this system is very slow indeed. If it gathers pace now that the AW season “proper” is getting underway, then I will post more often.

OK, so how has the system done over the last month.

Well, since the 1st of October the figures look like this:

As you can see, we have had the 1st winner! It was at odds of 12.41 (OUCH), and lost £114.10 of the bank, just like that!

The highlight of the month was on the 28th, when there were 3 qualifying selections in the same race, and they all lost.

I should point out that the system calls for races with 10-15 runners, it does not however state whether this is declared or actual. On the 28th there were actually 2 more qualifying selections in the same race, which both lost, but despite there being 10 declared runners, only 9 ran. Currently I have taken the view that due to the nature of this system, in that it tends to select high odds horses, it should be alright to go with 10-15 DECLARED runners, particularly as there tends to be fewer N/R’s on the AW,  and I have included them in the results and current bank figures.

As you can see, there were in fact 5 qualifiers on the 28th alone, which means just 7 for the whole of the rest of the month, you really could die of boredom with this one.

On to the current bank.

It currently stands at at total of £95.40 profit to £10 level stakes at Betfair SP prices, after deducting 5% commission.

It is interesting that due to the variation in Betfair odds there have been, for example, possible selections that went off at 12/1 SP but didnt qualify at Betfair SP, where as there have been some at 14/1 SP that did qualify.

So in summary, just over 9.5pts profit to date, which has taken about 10 weeks to accumulate. I think we can all see that this system is never going to make us rich overnight, but profit is profit and very little effort is required, currently probably a maximum of 5mins on the days that there is AW racing.

As it is the start of a new month it seemed a good time to update you as to progress with the No1 Lay System.

Since my last post on about the 8th of September there have been just 4 further selections, so it is still very slow going. The good news however is that all 4 selections went on to lose.

Betfair SP odds were 15.0, 12.42, 13.30 and 4.61

So to date we have had a total of 10 selections since the 23rd of August,  averaging roughly 2 per week, although with 5 of the 10 bets so far coming on 1 day, that average is more like 1 per week currently.

Average lay odds so far is 12.77

Current profit to £10 level stakes at Betfair SP prices  stands at £95.00

As I said previously, maybe not for the faint hearted, but with a current strike rate of 100%, what more could you ask for?

Well after a lengthy period of hibernation, just 1 selection in 12 days, the No1 Lay System suddenly burst into life at the weekend, when there were a potential 8 selections on Saturday at Wolverhampton.

Of those 8 potentials, 5  actually went on to qualify as bets, as they fell within the price parameters, using Betfair SP prices.

All 5 lost, at Betfair SP prices of :  15.0, 11.58, 16.92, 15.92 and 10.43

As I said in the initial review, the max price is capped at 17.0, which is just as well, as one of the potential selections went on to win at 22.0!!

Therefore, at £10 level stakes, using Betfair SP prices and after deducting 5% Betfair commission, the No1 Lay System currently stands £57.00 in profit

So far so good.
