Similar to the Fillies Trial, the 2000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday is a difficult puzzle to solve at this early stage of the season. With the campaign less than a week old, it is difficult to gauge which stables are in form and which are slow off the blocks. On paper at least this looks a race that should be fought out by Free Judgement and Viscount Nelson. The two colts had decent form in group company last campaign and look set to do well again this season.
As with any race of this type, there are a number of unexposed animals in the lineup and it would not be a huge surprise should one of these emerge victorious. Fighting Brave and Noll Wallop are the two that appeal most in the latter category. Given the flying start that Tommy Stack has made to the season and the frequency in which Ballydoyle outsiders beat the first string then a big run from either of these would not be a shock. Sebastian Flyte also cannot be ruled out easily.
In a difficult race a chance is taken on the fitness of Free Judgement, and he is the selection from Viscount Nelson. The Bolger colt is very decent but has yet to prove himself in the top grade and connections may well have him ready to do himself justice here at the first time of asking.
Summary: Free Judgement can beat Viscount Nelson in a tricky race where bets should be kept to a minimum.
