Red Mills Chase (Grade 2) Preview

Only five runners go to post for the featured Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday, and very little separates four of them at the weights. Washington Lad is the only runner who may be a little over-faced and he looks likely to struggle against this opposition. J’y Vole is perhaps the least exposed in the lineup and must have every chance on the evidence of her runaway success from The Sawyer at Punchestown last season.

Watson Lake and Glenfinn Captain are both well exposed at this stage but each would be right in contention if at their best. Siegemaster has been impressive carrying big weights in 3mile handicaps this season and if the drop down to 2m 4f doesn’t inconvenience here then he will also have every chance. Only 1Ib actually separates the top four here on official ratings.

In what is a very difficult race to suggest a bet I am going for Glenfinn Captain to come out on top from J’y Vole. Tom Taaffes 11-y-o does not have many outings these days and is sure to  be well primed for this contest. The others may have other contests down the line on their agenda whereas the selection is likely to have been laid out for this.
