Tips To Help You Bet Sensibly

It is not surprising to know that betting as a hobby and a form of gambling can be one of the most complicated to learn if you really want to take it seriously. It can be the easiest thing in the world, too. It is easy because you can just go to a betting site and just vote on your favourite team – and that is it! No more thinking, no more calculations – just place your confidence (and your cash) on a team that you like.

This is how most recreational gamblers play. But the more serious betting fan uses a bit of logic and mathematics into the mix. They are more thoughtful in their bets and they do place it very wisely. Playing sensibly is the hallmark of a mind gambler who really thinks his decisions through and this trait alone can, in a way, improve the odds of winning.

So what kind of things should you do in order to bet more wisely?

Look For Value

One of the important factors that will help contribute to successful sports betting is to get value on every single one of your bets. Value basically comes down to getting a better “deal” when compared to the true odds that are given on a particular team or competitor. For instance, after looking at a particular match you objectively determined that in that particular game, the underdog should be getting 3 points. But looking at the odds given to that particular competitor you notice that it is in fact being given 6 points then that is what is called a value betting proposition. This situation is called an overlay.

Value betting also means betting wherein you also assess the risk / reward ratio and looking for one that would favour you heavily. This situation would often arise when you bet on the underdog. It is a recognized fact that most bettors are afraid of backing the underdogs. But you, as a bettor, must realize that a poor team that receives a very large point spread does not necessarily have to win the game. It only needs to lose by less than the points it has been given. And the good thing about it is that, often enough, they do get it because the more dominant team is just more interested in winning and risking injuries to its players. They never even think about the point spread.

Go Against The Flow

It is a given that there are going to be teams that will have a strong following from the public. This could usually be the championship team from last year or a team that has “superstar” players. Teams like Manchester Utd, the Chicago Bulls, and the NY Yankees, have all been able to capture the imagination of millions of fans.

Some of the best value bets that a bettor can make is by actually going against these popular teams because the oddsmakers will adjust the line to reflect the expected influx of public money. Because of this, the underdog team will often be quoted at better odds or with a larger point spread than what would usually be given.
